Mission:
To provide practicing photographers with illustrated, useful techniques and tested solutions for creating superior photographs.

Readership

Practicing photographers—serious amateurs and professionals alike—who share a passion for intelligent discussions of advanced photographic techniques they can't find elsewhere. Most of our readers have been involved in photography for more than 15 years. At least one-third teach or have taught photography (workshops, high school and college) and use PHOTO Techniques as a class text and reference.

A 2007 reader survey showed our subscribers to be:

  • 56.3% advanced amateurs, 30.4% full or part-time professionals
  • 24.5% teach or have taught a photography course
  • 78.5% have recommended a photographic product
  • Big spenders in photographic equipment & accessories—within the last 12 months they spent an average of $2,273 on photographic equipment
  • 71.4% male, 90.0% college+, with an average household income of $109,771

Content:
Launched in 1979, PHOTO Techniques distinguishes itself from other photography magazines by focusing on methods for producing the best possible photographs and images. Bimonthly issues include in-depth discussions of digital and traditional subjects and how each plays an important part in controlling processes, resulting in better photographs.

Feature Articles:
Input—articles closely examine products/supplies and how to use them for high-quality capture. These include cameras, lenses, films, media storage, lighting and memory cards.
Output—articles closely examine products/supplies and how to best use them to create desired output. These include scanners, imaging software, papers, inks, printers and darkroom equipment.

PHOTO News—International photographer and writer Jerry O'Neill chronicles photography's past, present and future, including industry trends and new developments.

Photo Myths—Dick Dickerson & Silvia Zawadzki debunk myths about traditional photography.
