Two British photographers traveled through small-town America and captured the neon-lit details of motels, theaters, and restaurants in color. The pictures aren’t gritty, but neither are they romantic— perhaps just a bit nostalgic. Particularly welcome are photographs of many of the splendid movie theaters that still operate in remote locations. On the flip-side, it’s hard to not feel melancholy when viewing the Hopperesque shots of laundromats and cheap motels in the watery light before dawn. The author has a master’s degree in geology, and this is as much a book about geology as photography. Many of the numerous photos are beautiful, just not always printed as well as an expert photographer would print them. But what this book offers that most books of similar images do not, are detailed (and welcome) explanations of what we’re seeing. (Mikaya Press, 128 pages, $34.95)
